NMN vs NR: What's the Difference?
Rod SalmonNMN and NR get mentioned in the same breath, and plenty of people aren't sure which is which. Here's the short version, without the hype.
The basics
- NR is nicotinamide riboside.
- NMN is nicotinamide mononucleotide.
Both are forms related to vitamin B3, and both are building blocks the body can use to make a molecule called NAD+. The main structural difference is small: NMN is essentially NR with a phosphate group attached. Inside cells, NR can be converted into NMN.
What happens when you swallow them
This is where it gets less simple than the marketing suggests. A 2023 review of 25 NR trials in Science Advances found that most oral NR is broken down in the gut before it reaches the blood. Very little arrives intact.
How oral NMN is absorbed is still being researched, and studies don't yet give a clear answer.
What human studies have found
Honest answer: less than you might expect.
- NR: the same 2023 review found the most consistent result was a rise in blood NAD+ levels. The authors wrote that NR has shown "very few clinically relevant effects" in people, and noted many trials were small or lacked placebo groups.
- NMN: a 2025 meta-analysis of 8 trials (342 adults) found no significant effect on blood sugar or cholesterol markers. The trials were short, from 2 to 12 weeks, mostly in healthy adults.
Much of the excitement around both comes from animal research. That's worth knowing before you believe a big promise on a label.
So which one?
There isn't a proven winner. Human research doesn't show one clearly beats the other. What you can control is what's actually in the bottle.
What to check before you buy
- The amount per capsule. Not per serve of three, not "equivalent to".
- Purity. Look for a stated purity figure.
- Testing. Has it been tested by a third party?
- The AUST number. Look it up on the ARTG.
- No blends. Every ingredient should have its own amount.
